Tax Incentives
The Federal Tax Credit (ITC) is a credit that helps people pay for their solar energy systems. The ITC covers 30% of the cost of the system, which means that if you spend $20,000 on a solar panel system, you can get $6,000 back from the government in the form of a tax credit. The ITC was enacted by the federal government in 2006 and is constantly adjusting.
Solar Renewable Energy Credits, otherwise known as RECs, are awarded based on the production levels of your solar system over 15 years. Illinois is just one of a few states to incorporate this program, called the Illinois adjustable block program (also called Illinois Shines). The Illinois Power Agency administers the Illinois adjustable block program.
